"Between Timid and Timbuktu"

Hey E319 Students,

Throughout The Sirens of Titan, how does religion play a role? Is money important to Constant and Rumfoord? Add textual support to your claims.

Religion takes a backseat role in the Sirens of Titan. On the first page, Vonnegut belittles religion, “Gimcrack religions were big businesses”. Religion is placed in the past tense, as something that has become obsolete in society. The term ‘gimcrack’ itself belittles the institution, portraying it as an institution that is geared towards satisfying an audience (kind of life the quack medicine business of the eighteen hundreds). We also see this portrayal later in the chapter with Bobby Denton’s sermon. Bobby’s speech was specially tailored to incite as much emotion from the audience as possible, using loud voice (shown by all the explanation marks) and promoting audience interactivity through simple and well known phrases.

Let’s take a look at Bobby’s name. Right before Bobby is mentioned, Vonnegut was talking about Babel, which just happens to sound like Bobby. Denton sounds like dentist, or dental, pertaining to teeth, or if we were to expand the definition, pertaining to the mouth. So, in a loose interpretation it would mean a mouth that spews nonsense.
