Author to Audience

Hey E319 Students,

What is the purpose and exigence behind an author sending "text" to his/her audience?

If an author decides to send a “text”, whether it is a book, cartoon, or piece of art, there had to have been an initial purpose, or reason for them writing it. Before this class, sometimes I was in the mood to write for no reason at all. Now, I see that without a purpose, a piece of text cannot be a masterpiece. When Mr. Robin also said that if you throw a can of paint at all wall for no reason, it is not art; however, if you throw the same can of paint at the same wall for a reason, it can be considered art. When an author chooses to send a text to their audience, it is usually to promote their way of thinking. This may or may not include trying to persuade the audience that their way is the right way or even the wrong way. Creating a text may also be a way to release emotions. After learning this, I realized that when I thought I was writing for no reason in the past, perhaps I was really writing to get my emotions out to a non-bias audience who could no judge what I had done or what I was feeling.

I think when an author sends “text” to their audience their purpose is to send a preconceived notion as to what the text they are about to read will be about. I think they intend it as a preview, and therefore hope the audience connects to their point of view. I feel like when they create text they have to keep in mind what their audience is looking for, so when an author sends text to the audience I think it is so the audience sees what they hope to see. I feel like each author can have a different intention as to why they place that text or send it where it ends up.

An author uses a form of “text” in order to give his or her perception on whatever it is he or she wants to reveal to their audience. A form of “text” can be quite extensive, and like Mr. Robin explained today in class, a “text” also reveals the intention of the author. It is important that and author uses a purposeful “text” because through the “text” they can give their audience their point of view. Now, an author has the ability to persuade and to give his or her audience a perception that can be taken a variety of ways. But it is important that the author also conveys a message that will influence the audience to think in the way that the author views the subject as well. The author’s paradigm can create a meaningful “text” for the audience.

There are many forms of text however they all can be defined as any purposeful form of communication that conveys some sort of meaning. The purpose behind an author sending text to his or her audience is what the author attempts to accomplish by publishing the text. The reasoning of exigence from an author’s text is what obligates him or her to make the text. Without purpose and exigence, the text is ineffective and pointless, and actually not classified as “text”. When an author is sending “text” to their audience, he or she tries to demonstrate why them, the audience should be effected by this and how the message going to change people. I agree with Nicole because I believe the author intends the text to be a sort of preview to the audience. At the same time, the author is trying to gain common ground with the audience also. The text that the author sends allows the author to show their viewpoint, perception on a certain subject to the audience.

Text is not only limited to the written word- it is simply any purposeful form of communication. Text can be a book, a song, a dance, or any other way that a meaningful message can be carried from the author to his or her audience. Very often, an author creates a text to get his or her point of view out to an audience. The author wants others to share his or her perceptions and opinions about the given topic and then maybe even make the audience share these outlooks. Exigence is what makes the author want to create a text. There are many reasons for an author to create a text so this cannot be only limited to a few examples, but reasons can range emotion to credibility to logic that would make the author want to share his or her perceptions with others.
