When we were talking about the poem, and if it had punctuation, everyone would know where to put periods, etc. This being said, the periods would go before each word that was capitalized at the beginning of a line. However, I have a question. (Essential question?) If there were periods at the end of each "sentence", would they be considered periodic sentences, and if so, why would Whitman use these types in his poem?
Matt does pose an interesting thought. I am wondering if Whitman meant for those reading his poem to naturally add punctuation. Normally, while reading a poem, one is supposed to ignore their instincts and read the poem as written. Whitman chooses to not add punctuation, yet write as if he was doing so. Does he do this to somehow box out either those who read poetry "correctly" those who do not and add their own punctuation? (since each way has a different rythmic pattern)
This may not make sense, but I just wanted to get one more post in!
