Satire and Allegory

All comments pertaining to satire / allegory in general and/or how they apply to Cat's Cradle should be posted here. This is a great chance to practice for the in-class essay coming up that will focus upon these issues.

I don't think Vonneut is an atheist. He is not so much opposed to religion as he is opposed to the people and the ways that people choose to follow religions. He is not making fun of humans for believeing in God he is making fun of the way we choose to show it. People create wars, kill others, take vows of silence, and much more simply for their religion. He uses Bokononism to show the faults in the ideas of other religions. He makes bokononism seem absolutly ridiculous to us. We laugh when we hear some of the "strange" things that the bokonon people do. This, my friends, is satire. As we are making fun of this made-up religion, we are really making fun of our religion, without even knowing it. That is why it is so funny, we, as humans, are basically laughing at ourselves. This relates right back to one of vonneguts messages. . . Humans are not as smart as they like to think they are.

This book is good. . . you just have to get it.
