Quick Homework Poll

On a happy democratic day in E308, which would you choose:

1. more in-class writing, fewer typed assignments,
but more outside reading/annotation (about 40 pages every few days)

2. more reading/discussion during class,
decreased reading/annotation,
but more papers (about 1-2 STP every few days)

3. status quo (currently, I try to alternate between extensive reading/writing assignments, which gives you a fair allotment of class time to discuss text and composition and an ample schedule to prepare for the course at home)

I'm willing to simply catalog votes
or read cogent arguments on this topic.
If there is an overwhelming response from all three classes
for any one of these options, the class format may change.

I vote status quo because I like the discussions. They really reveal some interesting viewpoints and I don't mind the writing or reading. I personally would rather write a paper than have to annotate and read right now because of my homework in all of my classes and writing is a lot more natural for me, but I like alternating and the way you give us a heads up on the homework so I can plan accordingly.

I disagree with all the previous statements. I would love to reduce the annotating and reading. Writing the 1-2 pages (STP of course) really allows me to reflect and apply concepts used in class. Plus with todays wonderful technology, typing papers is very convientent. I would prefer to type a few pages rather than write a paragraph. Another thought, U.S. and Physics involve a ton of completely banal reading, though english readings are NEVER boring, it would be nice to write instead of read for at least one class.

I would suggest that you forget the whole democracy thing and just follow my vote.

Plus, don't we have a writing initiative at SHS this year?

I have to agree with Status Quo. It's an interesting mix, and if it's a good topic, writing comes easy. I already have an idea at what needs to be done, and since assignments are posted, and some we get ahead of time, I know what's expected of me. It's a bit of pathos here for me, as I'm afraid of the unknown, but I like the direction we're going in. I will be very disappointed if we change it.

Personally, I find it difficult to write in a classroom. There are too many distractions that prevent me from focusing on a composition.

Therefore, I vote for #2. I can take as much time as I want to answer a response question, and then discuss it in class with others the next day.

p.s. as for the reading in class, would we be given a text at the begining of the period and turn it in for an annotation grade when we leave, or could we take the in-class readings home to review and embellish the text-marking?
